🇳🇴 Norwegian A1: Dyr (Lesson 6)

Animals in Norwegian (dyr) for beginners

This A1 lesson teaches eight animals in Norwegian: pets, farm animals and the wildlife Norway is known for, like the elg (moose) and reinsdyr (reindeer). Each card adds a pronunciation or grammar tip, such as the silent g in fugl or the definite form katten.

What you will learn

• hund — dog — en hund, to hunder; the d is silent
• katt — cat — en katt, katten = the cat
• fugl — bird — the g is silent: say ful
• hest — horse — en hest, to hester
• ku — cow — ei ku; the plural is kuer or kyr
• elg — moose — watch for the elg warning signs on Norwegian roads
• reinsdyr — reindeer — et reinsdyr; often just rein
• bjørn — bear — Bjørn is also a common boy’s name

Practice questions

1. Which animal is an elg? Options: a deer, a moose, a wolf.
2. How do you pronounce fugl? Options: ful — the g is silent, fu-gel, fug-l.
3. The cat: Options: en katt, katter, katten.
4. What does bjørn mean? Options: beaver, bear, bird.

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Animal words come up on walks, on road signs, in children’s books and in conversations about pets. Note that dyr means animal, and the same word also means expensive — you will meet it again in the shopping lesson.
