🇳🇴 Norwegian A1: Farger (Lesson 3)

Norwegian colours (farger) for beginners

This A1 lesson teaches eight colours in Norwegian and the one grammar point that comes with them: adjectives add -t with et-words (et rødt hus) and -e in the plural (gule bananer). Each card shows the colour with an example and a pronunciation or spelling tip.

What you will learn

  • rød — red — et rødt hus: add -t with et-words
  • blå — blue — et blått hav: blå becomes blått
  • grønn — green — et grønt eple: one n drops before -t
  • gul — yellow — gule bananer: add -e in the plural
  • hvit — white — the h is silent; et hvitt hus
  • svart — black — sort is also correct; et svart hus, no extra t
  • brun — brown — en brun hund, et brunt bord
  • oransje — orange — never changes: et oransje skilt, oransje biler

Practice questions

  1. What colour is grønn? Options: blue, green, yellow.
  2. Et ___ hus (red) Options: rødt, rød, røde.
  3. How do you say hvit? Options: h-vit, with an h, hvitt, vit — the h is silent.
  4. Which colour never changes its ending? Options: gul, oransje, svart.

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Colours come up constantly: describing clothes in a shop, a car, a house or a bus line. They are also the easiest way to practise adjective endings, which you will use with every other adjective in Norwegian.
