🇳🇴 Norwegian Lesson 4: Family & Relationships

Norwegian relationship words: partners, friends and love

This lesson gives you the words Norwegians use for the people closest to them: kjæreste, samboer, married, engaged, friends and single. You also learn the warm, everyday way to say I love you and a question that starts many good conversations. For parents, siblings and children, see the Family & everyday life lesson; for cousins, aunts and in-laws, see Family & Relationships (familie).

What you will learn

  • kjæreste — boyfriend or girlfriend
  • samboer — partner you live with
  • Vi er gift — We are married
  • Vi er forlovet — We are engaged
  • en god venn — a good friend (venninne: a female friend)
  • Jeg er singel — I am single
  • Jeg er glad i deg — I love you (family, friends, partners)
  • Hvordan møttes dere? — How did you meet?

Practice questions

  1. What is a samboer? Options: a neighbour, a partner you live with, a cousin.
  2. Kjæresten min can mean… Options: only my girlfriend, my wife, my boyfriend or my girlfriend.
  3. How do you say “We are married”? Options: Vi er gift, Vi er forlovet, Vi er skilt.
  4. Jeg er glad i deg is said to… Options: only a new colleague, family, close friends and partners, only shop staff.

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Many couples in Norway live together as samboere without marrying, and kjæreste works for any partner, so these words come up in almost every personal conversation. Knowing the difference between Jeg er glad i deg and Jeg elsker deg helps you sound natural with friends and family.
