Lesson 3: Adjectives and Adverbs

Norwegian adjectives and adverbs: what this lesson covers

This free interactive lesson is part of the Mondosol Learn to speak Norwegian course. In about ten minutes you learn how Norwegian adjectives agree with the noun they describe, the irregular liten, and how the -t form of an adjective often works as an adverb.

What you will learn

• en stor bil — basic form with en- and ei-words.
• et stort hus — add -t with et-words.
• store biler — add -e in the plural.
• den store bilen — the definite form: den/det/de + adjective in -e + noun ending.
• liten, lite, små — the irregular adjective for small.
• Du snakker godt norsk — god becomes the adverb godt.
• Hun løper raskt — rask becomes raskt.
• Kan du snakke litt saktere? — sakte never changes; saktere means slower.

Practice questions

1. A big house: et ___ hus (stor, stort, store)
2. Two small cars: to ___ biler (liten, lite, små)
3. You speak Norwegian well: Du snakker ___ norsk (godt, god, gode)
4. Which means “the big car”? (en stor bil, stor bilen, den store bilen)

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: tap to flip, listen, and say each phrase out loud. Then practise the same phrases in quick rounds — listen and tap the right picture, match the pairs, build the sentence, listen and type — before a short quiz with hearts. A wrong answer costs a heart; at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart. Finish to earn XP and keep your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Adjective endings are one of the first things Norwegians notice when a learner speaks. Getting stor, stort and store right makes your Norwegian sound natural, and the same -t ending gives you a whole set of adverbs for free.
