🇳🇴 Norwegian A1: Mat (Lesson 5)

Norwegian food words for beginners

This A1 lesson teaches eight everyday food words in Norwegian, from brød and melk to the famous brunost. Each card adds one useful detail: whether the word is an en- or et-word, how to make the plural, or how the food fits into a Norwegian day.

What you will learn

  • brød — bread — et brød; the d is silent: say brø
  • melk — milk — Jeg drikker melk: I drink milk
  • eple — apple — et eple, to epler
  • fisk — fish — en fisk; laks (salmon) is the classic
  • ost — cheese — en ost, sliced thin with an ostehøvel
  • brunost — brown cheese — a sweet, caramel-tasting whey cheese
  • kaffe — coffee — en kopp kaffe: a cup of coffee
  • frokost — breakfast — lunsj is lunch, middag is the warm evening meal

Practice questions

  1. Jeg drikker en kopp ___ (coffee). Options: melk, fisk, kaffe.
  2. What is brunost? Options: a sweet brown cheese, brown bread, coffee with milk.
  3. What does frokost mean? Options: lunch, breakfast, dinner.
  4. Two apples: Options: to eple, to eplet, to epler.

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Food words are the ones you read every day on shop shelves and menus. Learning them with their en/et article from the start saves you from relearning them later, and words like matpakke, brunost and middag open small windows into how Norwegians actually eat.
