🇳🇴 Norwegian A1: Tall og tid (Lesson 2)

Norwegian numbers 1-12 and the clock

This A1 lesson teaches you to count from one to twelve in Norwegian — én/ett, to, tre, fire, fem, seks, sju (syv), åtte, ni, ti, elleve, tolv — and to tell the full hour. The cards focus on the numbers that sound different from how they are written, so you recognise them when someone says a price, a bus number or a time.

What you will learn

  • ett — one — ett hus, but én bil: one follows the noun’s gender
  • tre — three — sounds like treh, never like English tree
  • fire — four — say fee-reh; it has nothing to do with flames
  • sju — seven — sj sounds like sh; syv is also correct
  • åtte — eight — å sounds like the o in more
  • tolv — twelve — the v is silent: say toll
  • Hva er klokka? — What time is it?
  • Klokka er tre — It is three o’clock

Practice questions

  1. How do you ask the time? Options: Hvor er klokka?, Hva er klokka?, Hvem er klokka?
  2. What does fire mean? Options: flames, fourteen, four.
  3. Which number is pronounced toll? Options: tolv, to, tre.
  4. Klokka er sju means… Options: Seven minutes, It is seven o’clock, It is seventeen.

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Numbers are everywhere from day one: prices at the shop, your bus, your flat number, opening hours. Once you can count to twelve and say the full hour, the next steps — half past (halv) and quarter to (kvart på) — build directly on this lesson.
