Norwegian shopping phrases
This A1+ lesson takes you through a real shopping trip in Norwegian: commenting on the price, trying something on, asking for another size, deciding to buy and paying at the till. It builds on the price phrases from the Shopping and Numbers lesson (Hvor mye koster det?) and adds the sentences you need in a clothes shop.
What you will learn
- butikk — shop — a grocery shop is a dagligvarebutikk
- Det er billig — It is cheap
- Det er dyrt — It is expensive — dyr gets -t after det
- Kan jeg prøve den? — Can I try it on?
- Har dere den i en annen størrelse? — Do you have it in another size?
- Jeg tar den — I will take it
- kassa — the till, checkout
- Kan jeg betale med Vipps? — Can I pay with Vipps?
Practice questions
- How do you ask to try something on? Options: Kan jeg prøve den?, Kan jeg ta den?, Kan jeg betale den?
- Et dyrt hus means… Options: an animal house, an expensive house, a cheap house.
- Jeg tar den means… Options: I will think about it, I will return it, I will take it.
- What is Vipps? Options: a shop chain, a mobile payment app, a discount card.
How the lesson works
Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.
Why it matters
Shop staff in Norway usually switch to English when they hear an accent, so having a few ready sentences is what lets you keep the conversation in Norwegian. Card payment and Vipps are the norm almost everywhere, so knowing how to ask about payment is as useful as knowing the prices.
