🇳🇴 Norwegian Lesson 3: Travel & Directions

Norwegian travel phrases for trains and buses

This beginner lesson covers getting around Norway by public transport: asking about the next train, buying a ticket, finding the platform, understanding a delay and asking where to get off. The last card is a short direction you will hear on the way. For more on asking the way on foot, see the Asking for Directions lesson.

What you will learn

  • Når går neste tog til Bergen? — When does the next train to Bergen leave?
  • en billett til Oslo — a ticket to Oslo
  • tur-retur — return ticket — a one-way ticket is enkeltbillett
  • bussen — the bus
  • Toget går fra spor tre — The train leaves from platform three
  • forsinket — delayed — innstilt means cancelled
  • Hvor skal jeg gå av? — Where should I get off?
  • Det er rett fram og så til venstre — It is straight ahead and then left

Practice questions

  1. What is a tur-retur ticket? Options: a one-way ticket, a return ticket, a first-class ticket.
  2. Toget er forsinket means… Options: The train is full, The train is cancelled, The train is delayed.
  3. How do you ask when the next train to Bergen leaves? Options: Når går neste tog til Bergen?, Hvor er Bergen?, Hvor mye koster Bergen?
  4. Hvor skal jeg gå av? means… Options: Where do I get on?, Where should I get off?, Where is the exit?

How the lesson works

Start with the flashcards: each card shows one item with a picture cue and a short tip. Then you listen and tap the right picture, match words to meanings, say each one out loud, build the sentence from word tiles, and listen and type what you hear. Finish with the quiz: a wrong answer costs a heart, and at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart the lesson. Completing the lesson earns XP and keeps your daily streak alive.

Why it matters

Station announcements and departure boards use exactly these words: spor, forsinket, innstilt. Recognising them means you will not miss a platform change, and the questions let you ask staff or other passengers when something is unclear.
