Norwegian shopping and numbers: what this lesson covers
This free interactive lesson is part of the Mondosol Learn to speak Norwegian course. In about ten minutes you learn how to ask what something costs, understand prices in kroner from 20 to 1,000, and handle the checkout.
What you will learn
- Hvor mye koster det? — How much does it cost?
- Det koster femti kroner — It costs fifty kroner.
- tjue, tjueen, tjueto — 20, 21, 22.
- femtifem — 55: tens first, then units.
- hundre kroner — 100 kroner; tohundre = 200.
- tusen kroner — 1,000 kroner.
- Kan jeg få en pose? — Can I have a bag?
- Jeg bare ser meg rundt — I am just looking around.
Practice questions
- How do you ask the price? (Jeg bare ser meg rundt, Hvor mye koster det?, Kan jeg få en pose?)
- What is “femti”? (15, 5, 50)
- What is “tjueto”? (22, 12, 20)
- A shop assistant asks “Kan jeg hjelpe deg?” and you are only browsing. What do you say? (Tusen kroner, Hvor mye koster det?, Jeg bare ser meg rundt)
How the lesson works
Start with the flashcards: tap to flip, listen, and say each phrase out loud. Then practise the same phrases in quick rounds — listen and tap the right picture, match the pairs, build the sentence, listen and type — before a short quiz with hearts. A wrong answer costs a heart; at the end you can practise your mistakes or restart. Finish to earn XP and keep your daily streak alive.
Why it matters
Prices in Norway are often high, so hearing the number right at the till matters. Once you know the tens and how Norwegians put them together (tjueen, femtifem), you can follow any price you hear.
