Target audience research is the step most businesses skip, and it is why their marketing sounds like everyone else’s. Marketing aimed at everybody reaches nobody in particular.

What you will learn in this lesson
This lesson separates demographics — the who — from psychographics, the why, which is where the useful information lives. You will learn to identify a pain point, apply the jobs-to-be-done lens, write a buyer persona based on a real customer rather than an invention, and above all to capture the voice of the customer: the actual words they use to describe their problem.
- Ideal customer 🎯 — the one you most want more of
- Demographics 📋 — age, location, income — the who
- Psychographics 🧠 — values and motivations — the why
- Pain point 😣 — the problem they want solved
- Jobs to be done 🔧 — what they hire your product to do
- Buyer persona 👤 — a written sketch of one real customer
- Segment 🍰 — a group who behave similarly
- Voice of customer 🗣️ — their words, not your words
Why Target audience research matter
The single biggest lift in marketing performance usually comes from changing who you talk to and how you describe their problem, not from changing channel or budget. Businesses that write in their customers’ own language convert dramatically better than those writing in internal jargon, because the customer recognises themselves immediately.
Practice questions
The interactive card above ends with a short quiz. Here are the questions so you can review them afterwards — try to answer before checking the word in brackets.
- What do psychographics describe? (Values and motivations)
- What is a “pain point”? (The problem the customer wants solved)
- Why use “voice of customer” language? (People respond to their own words, not your jargon)
- What does “jobs to be done” mean? (What the customer hires the product to do)
How to practise
Find three reviews or messages from real customers and highlight the exact phrases they use about their problem. Repeat the card once a day for three days: short, frequent sessions beat one long session. Every completed lesson earns you 10 Mondi, and finishing the quiz earns 20 more.
