Study life

Start with your university office

If you come on Erasmus or a degree, your first stop is the international office of your university. The Universitat de València publishes an Erasmus and international student guide with deadlines, housing tips and arrival steps.

Spanish courses at a language school are a popular first step for everyone else, and a good way to meet people in the first weeks.

Getting around

The EMT youth pass

The city bus company EMT runs the buses. Under-30s can get the EMT Jove monthly pass for EUR 12.50, with unlimited trips and transfers. The city council approved keeping these discounts for the first half of 2026.

Paperwork first

NIE, residence and a bank account

  • EU and EEA citizens who stay more than three months register as residents and get an NIE.
  • Everyone else needs a national visa from a Spanish consulate before travelling, then books a TIE residence card appointment after arrival.
  • With an NIE you can register with Social Security, open a bank account and sign a lease or contract.

Check the rules for your passport on the Spanish foreign ministry site before you book anything.
