Contracts and Fine Print: What to Check Before You Sign

Illustration of a magnifying glass over a contract's fine print with a pen, checklist and calendar

A contract is a promise you can be held to. Phone plans, rental agreements, gym memberships, loans and subscriptions all start with a tick box or a signature, and the details that cost money are usually in the small print. Reading it takes ten minutes. Not reading it can cost years.

This article is the reading companion to the free Mondosol lesson Money Matters: Contracts & Fine Print, part of the Money course. Read it, watch the videos, or press play and listen first, then practise in the lesson.

A short checklist makes the fine print much less scary.

Why contracts matter

A contract is an agreement with rules for both sides. Once you accept it, those rules apply, even if you did not read them. Companies know most people skip the details, which is why important costs and limits sit there.

You do not need to be a lawyer. You need to know which five or six things to look for.

The checklist: what to look for

Look forAsk yourself
Total costWhat will I really pay over the whole period, including fees and set-up costs?
Length (binding period)How long am I locked in?
RenewalDoes it renew automatically? How and when can I cancel?
Price changesCan the price go up during the contract, and by how much?
PenaltiesWhat happens if I pay late or leave early?
What is includedWhat is not covered or limited?

Write down the numbers: total cost, length and exit costs.

Red flags in the small print

  • Automatic renewal with a short or hidden cancellation window.
  • “Free” trial that turns into a paid plan unless you cancel in time.
  • Vague words like “reasonable fees” or “at our discretion”.
  • Changes without notice to price or terms.
  • Large exit fees or a long notice period.
  • Pressure to sign today “because the offer ends”.

Contracts for loans deserve extra care because interest adds up, see Make Money: Avoiding Debt Traps, How Interest Makes Debt Grow.

Your rights to cancel

Rules depend on the country and the type of contract. In Norway, the right of withdrawal (angrerett) for consumer purchases made at a distance, such as online or by phone, or outside a shop is generally 14 days, according to the Store norske leksikon. There are exceptions, for example for some financial services and real estate, and the period starts when you receive the goods and information about the right.

Always check the specific terms and the official consumer authority for your case. Do not assume you can cancel just because you changed your mind.

Before you sign: five steps

  1. Ask for the full text and read it at home, not at the counter.
  2. Highlight total cost, binding period and cancellation terms.
  3. Ask questions in writing and keep the answers.
  4. Compare with at least one other offer.
  5. Save a copy and set a calendar reminder before any renewal or notice date.

If something is unclear and the stakes are high (a home, a big loan, a business deal), get independent advice before you sign.

Watch: how to read a contract

Two short videos give practical tips. They come from the US and general business contexts, so check local rules for specifics.

Frequently asked questions

Is a contract valid if I did not read it?

Usually yes. By agreeing, you accept the terms, so reading before you sign is your best protection. Some unfair terms can still be challenged under consumer law.

What is a binding period?

The minimum time you must keep paying, even if you stop using the service. Leaving early often costs money.

Do I have to accept terms and conditions online?

To use the service, yes. Before you click, look at price, renewal and cancellation. Save a copy or screenshot of the terms.

Can I cancel a subscription any time?

Not always. Check the notice period and renewal date. Some contracts end only at set dates.

When should I ask a professional?

For anything with large amounts or long commitments: housing, loans, business contracts, employment contracts. Ask a lawyer or an independent consumer service.
